The Challenge for 2010: Survive the Economic Downturn

The economic forecast took an abrupt 180 degree turn last fall, and the media sold doom and gloom at an accelerating rate. Did you panic? What measures did you put in place to face this issue. Has your business grown stronger or are you feeling the pinch?.

The biggest concern for most small business owners is, as always, cash flow. The following steps will help you keep your cash under control:

Step 1

Make sure you know the due date for payments on your vendors. When your customers delay payment, get on the phone to your suppliers and talk to them. Hiding out, saying the cheque is in the mail when it isn't, will just delay the problem. Open communication will lead to stronger relationships and an agreeable compromise.

Step 2

Review all automatic expenses your company incurs. Some of them may be outdated or no longer useful. Newspapers ads might be replaced by cheaper internet blasts, long distance travel replaced by conference calls, holiday gifts to customers replaced by a single, strategic donation to a local charity.

Step 3

Think twice before adding new equipment or staff. Be clear on your expectations of how this new addition will affect your bottom line. Monitor the performance - whether equipment or staff - and be ready to make a change if initial expectations are not met.

Step 4

Make it your goal for 2010 to build a strong plan and review the plan on a regular basis. Plans are only effective when they are compared to actual results. Be proactive and 2010 just might be your most successful year yet.
